It was almost three years ago, to the day that Dan Cracchiolo, Bob Downey and six or seven of
the real Hollywood Rat Pack were sitting in somebody's back yard getting drunk and listening to
Mel Gibson rave on about how hard it was to find a dialog coach who worked with Aramaic. I think it was Downey who said, "well, I guess it would be. They've all been dead for the past 2000 years. Everybody had their fifth good laugh of the afternoon at Mel's expense. Some of us could tell that the joke was getting old, but after all–nobody in Hollywood took Mel seriously. Nobody

Well, nobody's laughing now as Hollywood twists in the wind trying to keep up with the Box Office performance of last years lovefest with "Passion of the Christ." Such is the Tsunami Effect of a Big Idea. Even though the Distributors took Mel's production company to the cleaners with phrases like " fees consistent with Studio Practices," dude's grand children won't have to work a day in their lives. A Big Idea changes everything.

Three months ago, we were all waiting for Bob Lutz and the senior management team to fall on their collective swords for the mess they had made of General Motors. Now two little words have made these guys the darlings of D-town. "Employee Discount." A Big Idea changes everything. Today Ford Motor Company followed suit. Can't you just see that meeting at the Dearborn headquarters. "So, we got this great idea...We're gonna do what they did."

That's the thing with a Big Idea. It makes everybody else look stupid for not having it first. And even dumber for having to react to the aftermath. How do you think those Studio Execs who were laughing up their sleeves and into their Blackberries after Mel finished his pitch? How do you think that they feel when the trades are calling this the worst Box Office year in history because Mel's tentpole Big Idea, tilted the playing field?

O.K., so Mel Gibson had a Big Idea last year. And General Motors had a Big Idea this year. What about every body else?

According to the Chartered Institute of Marketing in the UK:

• 85% of all advertising is invisible, because it is so badly done.
• 14% of all advertising is extremely poor –either unattractive, stupid, patronizing, demeaning.
• The remaining 1% is terrific advertising.

And this from an industry that prides itself for being the progenitor of "The Big Idea."
Why is that do you think? I mean, I have certainly spent my share of pixels beating up on Madison Avenue for just being bloody awful at what they do. And every time I turn around some client type is chastising the industry for more or less the same thing.

Although, I will admit, when you take a look at the advertising of clients who are whining the loudest, you can't generally say they are leading by example. In many cases their company's advertising is leading the charge to banality.

Anyhow, all of this supposition prompted me to look at this another way. What if the truth of the matter is that the broad spectrum of American enterprise is just no longer interested in "the Big Idea?" What if they are just so wrapped up with their CPM, CTRs, RSS and all this other geegaw buzztech that the "Big Idea" just seems rather "ho-hum" by comparison? Might could be like that...maybe?

So I convinced my colleagues at the Institute of Advanced Practices In Advertising to break off some funding to try a little experiment. We bought 10,000 impressions on the Yahoo business network and ran the same banner you see at the top of this page.
Yep. No fancy footwork. No catchy phrases. No freaked out flash visuals. Just say what it is you got to say. One Big Idea can change everything. Get One.

I got the Institute to agree to pick up 75% of the cost for providing 200 companies with bonified Big Ideas to inject their companies with a competitive edge in the market place. Big Ideas. Little Price Tag. So we are gonna run this Big Idea Sale for a month and see if any body bites. As of when I am writing this there have been 323 Impressions and 0 clicks at the end of the first day.

We'll do the right thing. We'll juggle the creative and test the response rates according to all the variables. The Office pool at IAPIA is betting on less than 1% response. I'm holding .001 response. That's why I wanted to open it up to you guys. Anybody out there need a "Big Idea"? You'll never get me at a better price. I think after IAPIA puts in their money the price tag is around $2,500 US.

Anyway it's a very interesting experiment. Let's see what develops, if anything.
